It lies in the north-east of the country, on the azure Mediterranean coast. Founded by the Iberians as early as the 5th century BC, Tarragona is one of the oldest cities in Spain. It was conquered by the Romans in the 3rd century BC and was the capital of the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis; today it is the capital of one of the four Catalan provinces. The remains of the walls built to defend the city from foreign attack bear witness to its former power.

Tarragona's name comes from its founder, Publius Cornelius Tarraco, and in the past the city was known simply as Tarraco. It is the oldest Roman city on the Iberian Peninsula, which you can feel in the many historic monuments dating from that glorious time.

Tarragona is a real treasure trove of Roman history, with well-preserved archaeological sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list. During the excursion we will see the Roman amphitheatre, the Roman forum and the Devil's Bridge - an aqueduct 217 m high and 26 m long. The amphitheatre was built for 14,000 people, but during gladiator fights it was often overcrowded and there were not enough seats. Its strategic position near the sea meant it could be flooded at high tide and used to recreate sea battles. The Roman amphitheatre in Tarragona is one of the best preserved in Spain and is still used for cultural events and performances. The Roman forum, with its impressive columns and ruins, will take you back to the glory of the Roman Empire.

Tarragona's old town will impress you with its medieval charm. It is full of narrow cobbled streets, charming squares and historic buildings, and at its heart stands Tarragona Cathedral - Santa Tecla. It dates from the 12th century and is a splendid example of Gothic and Romanesque architecture. Its bell tower offers a stunning view of the city.

Its name means “serrated mountain”, after the unique rock formations that create a dramatic, almost surreal landscape. At the top of the mountain stands the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat, founded in the 11th century in honour of the Mother of God. It is one of the most important spiritual centres in Catalonia. According to one legend, in the 9th century some young shepherds were blessed with a divine vision. They saw a radiant light descending over Montserrat mountain and heard angelic voices. The phenomenon was repeated on several consecutive Saturdays. Later, the statue of the Black Virgin Mary was found in a cave at the top of the mountain.
