Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 Sofia - Lamezia Terme
Meeting at Sofia Airport for the flight to Lamezia Terme. Transfer and check-in at the hotel according to the selected package. Dinner. Overnight stay.

Day 2 Calabria (Reggio di Calabria and Scilla)
Breakfast. Full-day excursion to Reggio di Calabria, Scilla (Scilla) and Chianalea (included in the price).

Reggio di Calabria is the largest city in Calabria, on the shore of the Strait of Messina, opposite Sicily. The city has an ancient history - it was founded in the eighth century BC by Greek colonists and was one of the most important cities of Magna Graecia. Over the centuries Reggio came under the rule of the Romans, Byzantines, Normans and Aragonese, and after the devastating earthquake of 1908 it was rebuilt in its modern form.

The city's best-known sight is the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio Calabria, home to the famous Riace Bronzes - among the most impressive works of ancient Greek art.

Our walk begins on the Lungomare Falcomatà promenade, often called “the most beautiful kilometre in Italy”. From there you can enjoy an impressive view of Sicily and, in clear weather, even the Etna volcano.

We continue to the Arena dello Stretto - an open-air amphitheatre with a panoramic sea view - and then head for the largest cathedral in all of Calabria, the Duomo di Reggio Calabria.

After our organised walk you will have free time to enjoy the city - to have lunch, visit the archaeological museum (entrance fee), stroll along Corso Garibaldi or simply soak up the atmosphere of this beautiful city.

In the afternoon we will be enchanted by the views of the Purple Coast (Costa Viola) and one of the most picturesque seaside towns in Southern Italy - Scilla (Scilla).

The town's name is linked to the mythological sea monster Scylla, described in Homer's “Odyssey”. During our stay in Scilla we will enjoy a pleasant walk along the promenade and the beach, which offer beautiful views of the Strait of Messina and the coast of Sicily.

The Chianalea quarter - the town's old fishing village, known for its narrow lanes, colourful boats and houses built right above the sea - has a special charm. Here you will feel the authentic atmosphere of Calabria and the traditions of the local fishermen.

If you wish, you can climb up to the viewpoint and the imposing Ruffo Castle, set on a rocky headland above the sea. From there you will enjoy impressive views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Strait of Messina and the coast of Sicily - some of the most beautiful panoramas in Southern Italy.

To finish, don't miss the chance to enjoy traditional swordfish seafood specialities in one of the cosy seaside restaurants, or an Italian coffee, a cocktail or home-made ice cream - or simply sink into the relaxed rhythm of Calabrian dolce far niente.

Transfer to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 Calabria
Breakfast. Free time or an optional full-day excursion to Taormina (at an extra charge). Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4 Calabria
Breakfast. Free time or an optional full-day excursion to the Aeolian Islands (at an extra charge). Dinner and overnight stay.

After a panoramic drive through the city of Messina, our route continues along the picturesque Ionian coast, revealing impressive views of the Sicilian shore.
  • On reaching the foot of Monte Tauro, we will take a free shuttle bus from the coach car park to Porta Messina - the historic entrance to Taormina's old town. On the way we will stop at the impressive Palazzo Corvaja and the remains of the Roman theatre, the Odeon.
  • Continuing through Taormina's charming atmosphere, we will reach the emblematic Piazza IX Aprile, which offers a magnificent panorama of the Etna volcano and the bay of Giardini Naxos. We will also visit the Piazza del Duomo, where the imposing cathedral known as “the Fortress of God” stands, together with the fountain with the female centaur - the symbol of the town.

  • At the end of the visit we depart for our hotel in Calabria.
  • Note: The excursion runs with a minimum of 20 travellers booked.

  • Full-day excursion to the Aeolian Islands

  • Adult / Child: €85

  • In the morning we head for the port of Tropea. A boat trip to the Aeolian Islands is one of the most exciting experiences of a visit to Southern Italy. The archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consists of seven volcanic islands known for their unique nature, crystal-clear waters and impressive volcanic landscapes.
  • Our first stop is the island of Vulcano - the island of fire and nature's healing power. Vulcano is the island that gave its name to all the volcanoes in the world. On its slopes you can see smoking fumaroles and the characteristic yellow deposits of sulphur. On the island you can swim at a black-sand beach, but one of its greatest natural sights is the Acque Calde beach - a place where the sea literally bubbles from underwater volcanic fumaroles, creating the feeling of a natural jacuzzi in crystal-clear waters.
  • After a short boat trip we reach the island of Lipari - the heart of the Aeolian Islands. Lipari is the largest and most populated island of the archipelago. Above the town rises an imposing citadel, home to the archaeological museum and the island's cathedral. In your free time you can stroll through the charming historic centre, enjoy a good meal, wander the lanes with their shops and boutiques or simply take in the views from a cosy café.
  • The third island in our programme, Stromboli, is the best known, dominated by the volcano of the same name, which rises almost 924 metres above sea level. The Stromboli volcano is among the most active in the world. Because of its frequent small eruptions it is known as “the Lighthouse of the Mediterranean”.
  • The most memorable moment of the excursion is watching the volcano around sunset or in the evening from the deck of the boat, with an impressive view of the Sciara del Fuoco (“Stream of Fire”) area - the steep slope down which volcanic material flows straight into the sea.
  • Transfer to the hotel.
  • Note: Depending on the programme and its length, breakfast or dinner may be a packed meal, ordered at the hotel reception the evening before.

  • Full-day excursion to Gerace with a tasting of bergamot products and a tourist train ride included

  • Adult: €70 / Child: €50

  • After breakfast we head for Gerace - the medieval jewel of Calabria. The fortress town lies at 500 m above sea level with panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and is considered one of the 100 most beautiful medieval villages in Italy.
  • Legend has it that its name comes from the Greek word hierax - “hawk”, the bird that, according to tradition, showed the right place to found the town. Gerace is also called “the holy city”, because in the past it had over 100 churches and monasteries. Today about 17 significant church buildings remain, among them the majestic Norman cathedral - one of the largest in Southern Italy.
  • Also of interest are the ruins of the Norman castle, the old town gates and the viewpoints offering lovely views of the coast.
  • The area is also famous for bergamot - the “green gold” of Calabria, a precious citrus fruit used to make fragrant oils, liqueurs and sweet specialities.
  • We will take a tourist train from the foot of Gerace up to the historic centre and go on a walking tour of the town; afterwards you will have free time for lunch (optional) and to enjoy a stroll back in time among the stone houses, medieval streets and traditional workshops.
  • Then we will take the train back down to the coach car park.
  • To finish, we have prepared for you a tasting of bergamot products, typical Calabrian cured meats and cheeses.
  • Transfer to the hotel.
  • Note: The excursion runs with a minimum of 20 travellers booked.
